Everyone wants to be a good gift-giver, and when you're working from a registry, you can't go wrong. (It also cuts down on those "What were they thinking?" presents.)

Do start four or five months before you're due.
Starting early gives you plenty of time to consider your choices and change your mind. It also allows for proper lead time on larger items and special orders. Besides, you'll be glad you got it taken care of if the baby comes early.

Do choose items with a wide range of prices to accommodate all budgets.
Unlike bridal registries, it's typical for a baby registry to have a lot of smaller items and everyday essentials. And don't be afraid to include some splurges: You never know when friends or family might want to go in together on a gift!

Do register for gift cards.
They're simple, convenient, and perfect for the gift-giver suffering from a severe case of indecision. They also add an easy option if you're running out of things on your list!

Do have a shower, because it's a great way to get all your friends together.
You don't necessarily have to open your gifts at the shower -- just be sure to write thank you notes.

Don't keep your registry a secret.

Do check in on your registry as the shower date approaches.
